Assistant Secretary for Operations, Security, and Preparedness since July 2013. He facilitates and integrates VA's comprehensive emergency management "all-hazards" program. He is VA's Continuity Coordinator and has responsibility for VA's 24/7 Integrated Operations Center and Continuity of Operations (COOP) sites.
From November 2001 to January 2005, he was the Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Planning, and Preparedness. In 2001 he served as Executive Assistant to the Chief Communications Officer, Veterans Health Administration. From February 1999 to October 2000, he served as VA Deputy Chief of Staff.
Before coming to VA, Colonel Hanretta retired from the U.S. Army in 1999 with 30 years of service. Colonel Hanretta was the Chief of Staff and Executive Officer to the Deputy Under Secretary of the Army for International Affairs.
From July 1991 through December 1995, he served as the Chief of Staff, Department of Defense 50th Anniversary of World War II Commemorations Committee, which focused on thanking and honoring veterans and their families for their service to our Nation.
Colonel Hanretta served as a Ranger Advisor in Vietnam; with the 1st Ranger Battalion at Ft. Stewart, Georgia; commanded Headquarters Battery and B Battery, 319th Field Artillery in the 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC; activated and commanded the 3-7th Field Artillery Battalion in the 25th Infantry Division (Light), Hawaii; and served as Senior Aide to the Secretary of the Army.
Born in Cornwall, New York, in November 1946, he graduated from Siena College in 1968 as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Field Artillery. He later earned a Master of Science Degree in Logistics Management from Florida Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of Ranger, Airborne, Pathfinder, and Air Assault Schools, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. In 2003 he graduated from Leadership VA (LVA), in 2005 he graduated from the Federal Executive Institute "Leadership in a Democratic Society" program, and since 2007 he has served on Harvard's National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) National Advisory Board.
In 2010, Kevin Hanretta received the Presidential Rank Award for meritorious exceptional career accomplishments and commitment to public service. In August 2010 he successfully completed the DOD Joint Executive Management Program, and in 2011, he graduated from the VA Senior Executive Strategic Leadership Course at Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina.
