Renewed Focus on Accountability and Education
Organizationally, the Supply Processing and Distribution Program (SPD), which is responsible for the proper cleaning of medical equipment, was elevated to the very high level of a stand-alone national program with top-down enforcement of standardized procedures. SPD boards have been created throughout VA's Health Care Networks to oversee local facilities and their compliance with VA SPD policies and procedures. This realignment will allow for improved management of the program, including dedication of additional resources where needed.
As part of VA's rigorous continuing education commitment, VA also arranged for a nationally-recognized organization promoting excellence in the processing of reusable medical equipment (The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management) to offer additional training and independent certification to all VA Chiefs of SPD in state-of-the-art techniques for sterile processing.
VA is committed to keeping processes transparent so Veterans and their families never need question our commitment to their care.
