VA COORDINATION PLAN FOR ENCAMPMENT CLOSURES

A Word from Monica Diaz
Executive Director, VHA Homeless Programs Office

September doesn’t just bring cooler temperatures and the smell of pumpkin spice. We mark many important national observances this month, and I’d like to focus today on two of them.

The first is National Suicide Prevention Month—which is particularly meaningful at VA, where one of our top priorities is preventing Veteran suicide.

During this season each year, I reflect on the connection between homelessness and suicide risk and how our work can stop homelessness from turning into hopelessness.

Encampment Closures

We’re continuing to support Veterans impacted by encampment closures. We’ve developed a plan to coordinate with local agencies to provide same-day housing, connect Veterans to services to help them maintain permanent housing, and prevent them from entering the criminal
legal system.

Health Update

Updated flu and COVID-19 shots are now available to provide you with important protection against severe respiratory disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting your yearly flu shot by the end of October to make sure you’re protected this winter. Veterans enrolled in VA health care can receive the shots for free. Check your local facility’s website to see if they offer walk-in clinic hours or call them to schedule an appointment. The vaccines can be administered at the same time.
