Getting and Giving Information

Another important aspect of communication is related to getting and giving information between superiors and subordinates.

In the military, orders are given with the expectation that they will be followed. The expression "stay in your lane" means don’t ask questions: do as you are commanded with the information you have.

In the civilian workplace, things are less cut and dry. Civilian employees are expected to ask for clarification or more information when they need it. The ability to ask a superior for clarification, or state that one needs specific kinds of help or support to do a job, are important skills in the civilian workplace. The EAP counselor can work with the Veteran to explore how he or she might get clarification on different work tasks. It may also be beneficial to explore and challenge his or her beliefs about what it means to ask for help.
