As Acting ADUSH for Office of Health Informatics (OHIO), Mr. Hume ensures that VA’s staff and the patients they serve receive timely, relevant informatics products and resources, continuously improving Veterans’ health. OHI is the focal point for the advancement of the Department of Veteran Affairs’ (VA) electronic health record (EHR) and information systems, and is the home to such programs as the VistA Evolution efforts of the Office of Technology and Information Strategy (OTIS), the Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) and the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Health Record (VLER). Overseeing experts in fields including health information management, privacy, informatics, health IT security and IT patient safety, Mr. Hume directs VA’s health, medical and business information contained in the electronic health record and other VA systems. These experts and the systems they use collaboratively provide VA advanced and secure enterprise data systems, decision support and business intelligence, facilitating evidence-based decisions for Veteran patients and their families, clinicians and health care delivery systems-managers.
Mr. Hume also leads the Strategic Investment Management (SIM) office, which is responsible for the timely provision of structured information that enables leadership to make knowledgeable decisions on health and health IT investments. SIM is comprised of the following services: Business Architecture, Investment Governance Services, Open Source Management, and Requirements Development and Management.
Prior to joining the Department of Veterans Affairs in September 2007, Mr. Hume served 27 years in the United States Army culminating his military career as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Army Medical Department and Information Systems Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. During his career he also served as CIO for the 18th Medical Command in Seoul, Korea; the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; the Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis Washington and the Army Medical Command at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He also served as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Military Health System in Falls Church, Virginia.
