What can I do about Delirium?

What can I do about delirium?

The most important step in dealing with delirium is to identify it. Most times it is a sign of a worsening medical condition or side effects. Watch out for confusion and treat it as a medical emergency. Patients with delirium may be afraid and may need reassurance that people are trying to help them.

The best way to treat delirium is to fix the underlying cause by:

  • Treating medical problems and/or stopping medications.
  • Talking with your provider to make sure all the medications you take are needed.
  • Wearing glasses and hearing aids. This can help to prevent delirium and (if it is present) help you to recover more quickly.
  • Drinking enough fluids.
  • Following healthy sleep habits.

Health care providers can also support the patient and family by providing information and meeting basic comfort needs.
