The Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans met at the VA Medical Center February 18 - 19, 2009. On the first day, the Committee talked with Bruce Rooney about changes in Atlanta VA healthcare services since the Gulf War. The Committee also spoke with Dr. Suzanne Cullins about Registry and Compensation & Pension Exams and Dr. Sanjay Ponkshe about Gulf War Veterans' primary care. Robin Anderson along with the VISN 7 Director, Larry Biro, and Dr. Gordon Schectman, the National Director for the Post Deployment Integrated Care Initiative (PDICI) Model explained the strategy for the PDICI rollout in VISN 7. Colonel Sumathy Reddy talked with members about the current pre and post deployment procedures for the Army Reserve which resulted from lessons learned from the Gulf War. Dr. Herwardt ended the day's presentations with a discussion on Leishmaniasis Disease.
On the second day, the Committee spoke with Tom Cook, Assistant Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service Field Operations and Claims and Robert Horton, the Public Information Officer for the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Atlanta Veterans Benefit Administration staff, Al Bocchicchio, Eboni White, and Bambi Anderson-Ivers followed with a discussion on compensation and pension claims, Gulf War Illness claims, and education benefits. The Committee also had the opportunity to speak with a panel of Gulf War I Veterans and their family members as well as members of the public.
