VA Assistance to Help Avoid Homelessness

With layoffs affecting workers across the country, including Veterans, many Americans are now in need of assistance to navigate financial challenges and secure new employment. VA staff are available to support Veterans facing job loss by connecting them with resources and employment services provided by VA and other government agencies. Below are details on several resources and services available for Veterans who require assistance during this difficult time.

If struggling to pay rent, utilities, or other housing costs…

Use legal aid resources, such as Free Legal Clinics and legal service directories to avoid eviction.

Find Free Legal Clinics near you on the VA Office of General Counsel’s website.
Use national directories of legal service providers, including Stateside Legal and ABA Home Front, to find legal service providers.

SSVF provides case management and supportive services to prevent homelessness or to rapidly re-house Veterans and their families who are homeless.
The SSVF program’s Shallow Subsidy intervention initiative—currently being expanded to be available in every county and equivalent in the 50 United States; the District of Columbia; Puerto Rico; the U.S. Virgin Islands; and Guam—provides a modest subsidy for two years to extremely low-income Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
