Over 500 athletes competed in the 43rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games in New Orleans July 25-30. This year's event featured participants from 24 to 89 years old, showcasing the diverse age range of Veteran athletes.

From VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, U.S. Army-Navy Veteran and VA Volunteer Al Marconi competed in Archery, Motor Rally, Motorized Slalom and Wheelchair Soccer. Marconi won two Gold medals and one Silver.

“The Wheelchair Games have inspired me to adapt to sports and because of that, I became an Archery Coach,” said Marconi, who has been attending the Wheelchair Games for 15 years. “My experiences have made me a staunch proponent of the physical and psychological healing qualities of adaptive sports.”

For six days, Veterans engaged in 23 events, and made countless connections. Although many left with medals, they appreciated the friendships and experiences most.

At the Wheelchair Games, “I’m able to share experiences with other Veterans who experience challenges like me,” said Marconi. “The doctors and nurses can heal our bodies, but these games heal our inside wounds, our hearts.”

VA and Paralyzed Veterans of America co-present the Wheelchair Games annually to promote healthy activity, camaraderie, and awareness of Veterans' abilities and potential. Athletes, volunteers, sponsors, families, and VA and PVA staff poured their hearts into making this event one for the books.

Packed with an overflow of cheers, vibrant color and competition, Veterans left nothing behind in New Orleans. The 43rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games has ended, but the memories and stories will make a lasting impression.

As Veterans said goodbye to New Orleans, they eagerly anticipate next year's games in Minneapolis July 17-22, 2025.
