Temporary Markers, Permanent Messages

Silvia Espinola Written Note
Written affirmation by Silvia Espinola - "When you see something beautiful in someone, tell them. It may take a second to say, but for them it could last a lifetime."
By Michael Lemmons, Public Affairs Specialist

In times of adversity, a simple act of kindness can illuminate the darkest of days. Such is the case when a compassionate employee at Robley Rex VA Medical Center decided to spread messages of hope and encouragement by writing them on a window with a dry erase marker.

This heartfelt gesture not only touches the hearts of patients and staff within the hospital but also resonates deeply with individuals far beyond its walls. The story of this small yet impactful continuous display of empathy serves as a powerful reminder of the profound influence that positivity and compassion can have in healthcare settings and beyond.

Meet Silvia Espinola, a compassionate and creative employee known for her infectious positivity and uplifting spirit. The simple yet powerful messages written on the window by Silvia have an incredible impact, bringing smiles to faces and sparking a sense of optimism in the hearts of all who pass by, and even those she works with like Karissa Hill who says, “It’s always nice coming into work and seeing the positive messages she writes on the window. Her messages reflect her personality, she’s just always so cheerful and a joy to be around.”

Studies have shown that positive affirmations and messages of encouragement can significantly improve patient well-being, and Silvia’s initiative was a shining example of this phenomenon in action. And not only did Silvia’s messages uplift patients, but they also boost the morale of hospital staff, promoting a sense of unity and camaraderie in the face of the challenges of healthcare work.

“I really love to see the smiles on people’s faces when the read the messages”.

In the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, it's easy to overlook the impact of small gestures. Yet, in the context of healing, these acts of kindness can be a powerful force. A simple word of encouragement, a smile, or a thoughtful note can make a world of difference to someone going through a challenging time. By recognizing and seizing the moments of connection that present themselves in healthcare settings, we can transform routine interactions into opportunities for healing. Whether it's a brief conversation with a Veteran, a gesture of empathy, or a shared moment of positivity, these small actions can create a ripple effect of healing and hope.

“They all like it, I have Veterans giving me some ideas on what to write. I had Veterans taking pictures and telling me how they needed to hear that. Veterans and staff tell me they look forward to reading the message of the day, some say that every time they have an appointment, they make an effort to stop by and read the message of the day. I just had a Veteran today telling me how I put a smile on his face. This makes my day, you never know what someone is going through, and if I can make them smile or feel better, this is what love and kindness is about.”

To ensure that these initiatives continue to flourish, it's crucial to sustain momentum and support for acts of encouragement in healthcare settings. By providing resources, recognition, and ongoing encouragement for staff members to engage in small gestures of kindness, Robley Rex employees can nurture a culture of empathy, resilience, and healing that benefits everyone involved.

“Showing kindness and love Is not just a deed, as an attitude, a word, a smile, a look.  I believe you can change someone’s day just by showing that you care.”

As we reflect on the remarkable impact of one individual's thoughtful actions, we are reminded of the ripple effect that kindness and encouragement can create. In a world often filled with challenges and uncertainties, moments of compassion like these serve as beacons of light, guiding us towards a brighter and more hopeful future. Let this inspiring tale inspire us all to embrace the power of uplifting gestures and words, knowing that even the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference.
