VA No Longer Requires Fasting for Most Blood Tests
blood tests
By Jarrad Hensley, Public Affairs Officer
Beginning April 17, 2023, the VA will no longer require fasting for most blood tests.
Why the change?
- Accurate blood test results can be obtained without overnight fasting for most blood tests.
- New research shows overnight fasting can cause low blood sugar. Especially for people with diabetes.
- Low blood sugar can lead to accidents and other harmful events.
- After fasting all night, everyone wants a blood test first thing in the morning. No fasting means getting your blood tests anytime during normal clinic hours.
What is not changing?
- Some special blood tests still require fasting or not taking certain medicines.
- Your health care team will give you detailed instructions if you should not take your daily medicines or need to fast for a blood test.
