Heroes on the Water: Empowering Veterans Through Nature
Labor Day weekend was filled with kayaking, fishing, grilling, and reconnecting with nature. But mostly, the weekend was about relaxing and enjoying the last days of Summer.
The Haven at Crab Orchard Refuge opened its doors to our Veterans, first responders, and their families. Many were seen along the shorelines on all areas of this large, picturesque property, fishing and enjoying family time. Those that wanted to venture onto the water were able to do so via kayaks.
The Heroes on the Water, Wabash Valley chapter, provided guests with free access to kayaks, fishing rods and bait. Marion VA staff also volunteered to assist the Heroes on the Water organization make this event more relaxing for guests.
Brandon Sisto, chapter captain shares that, "it's all about getting the veterans out here to connect with nature, and to be able to relax. If we help one veteran connect with nature, than our job here was a success."
Heroes on the Water, Wabash Valley Chapter
The Heroes on the Water Wabash Valley chapter is dedicated to providing a therapeutic and relaxing experience for veterans, first responders, and their families, has become a fresh outlet for the community.
Founded by Ken Ferguson and later joined by Brandon Sisto, both veterans themselves, the chapter has grown from humble beginnings to a vital support system for those who have served. Ken, a dual-branch veteran of the Army and Marines, and Brandon, an Army veteran, have poured their time into creating a program where veterans can find solace and connection through nature.
The mission of Heroes on the Water is simple, yet profound: to offer a stress-free environment where participants can engage in activities like kayaking and fishing. These outdoor adventures are not just recreational, they are therapeutic, providing a much-needed escape from the stresses of everyday life. The organization ensures that all necessary equipment, from fishing poles to kayaks, is provided free of charge, eliminating any barriers to participation.
The Wabash Valley chapter’s events are planned in advance and executed with the help their members, and also with the help of their family members and friends. The chapter's vision is to expand its reach, increase visibility in the community, and build stronger relationships with other chapters and organizations that want to help veterans reconnect through nature.
One of the unique aspects of Heroes on the Water is its flexibility. While the chapter organizes several events throughout the year, it also offers one-on-one outings for veterans who need immediate support. This personalized approach ensures that no veteran is left behind, and everyone can experience the healing power of nature.
