On Sept. 4, 2024, the Miami VA Healthcare System hosted a commissioning ceremony for Dr. Irina Zuyeva, a staff psychologist who was appointed as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

The ceremony was a significant moment in Dr. Zuyeva’s journey from Kazakhstan to the United States and now into military service.

Growing up in Kazakhstan, Dr. Zuyeva admired the strength and freedom of the United States. Watching the 9/11 attacks on television left her feeling immense sadness and fear, despite being far from the events. “If the greatest and most powerful country in the world can be attacked in that manner, what can happen to countries that are not nearly as strong?” she said. The bravery of U.S. troops responding to the attacks inspired her admiration and respect for the military — feelings that only grew over the years.

After moving to the United States, Dr. Zuyeva pursued graduate studies in psychology, knowing she wanted to work with Veterans. After obtaining her U.S. citizenship, she was accepted into the Clinical Health Psychology residency program at the Miami VA, where she worked with combat Veterans, many of whom are still serving in the reserves. Her experience at the VA deepened her appreciation for Veterans, ultimately inspiring her decision to join the U.S. Army Reserves.

“Every day, I witness great honor, bravery, dedication and passion within the Veterans I work with,” Dr. Zuyeva said. “Their commitment and resilience reminded me of the admiration I felt for U.S. troops as a child.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Zuyeva took the oath of office, administered by United States Air Force Col. Gillette, a colleague and mentor who served as her inspiration. Dr. Zuyeva described the moment as filled with pride and honor. “It was incredibly special to have someone I admire and look up to start me on this new journey,” she said.

As she takes on the responsibilities of both her civilian and military roles, Dr. Zuyeva hopes to continue serving Veterans and inspiring future generations of psychologists and service members. “My greatest hope is to continue to ensure that our nation remains the symbol of strength, hope and freedom,” she said.

The Miami VA Healthcare System congratulates Dr. Zuyeva on her commissioning and looks forward to her continued service to Veterans and the nation.
