Post-Deployment Clinic Reopens at Miami VA
The Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center's Post-Deployment Clinic has officially reopened after 4.5 years of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The clinic provides integrated, comprehensive services tailored to combat Veterans and transitioning service members, offering a variety of essential healthcare services.
The clinic offers primary care, nursing, psychology, physical therapy, and case management services to meet the unique medical and psychosocial needs of combat Veterans. "The clinic provides a one-stop shop for our combat Veterans to receive comprehensive care," said Elizabeth Ruiz, Senior Social Worker at the Miami VA. "Providers specialize in supporting Veterans by addressing their medical and psychosocial needs with a multidisciplinary approach."
During its closure, the clinic was repurposed to support COVID-19 efforts. The reopening brought with it new improvements, including fresh paint, removal of outdated wallpaper, and new furniture, such as exam beds, desks, and updated artwork. Veterans returning to the clinic have expressed positive feedback, describing it as a "safe, clean, and welcoming environment."
The Post-Deployment Clinic is critical in addressing challenges faced by Veterans returning from deployment, such as reintegration into civilian life, managing environmental exposure education, and mental health support. "We provide medical evaluations, mental health support, environmental exposure education, and resources, as well as navigation of VA programs," added Ruiz. These services ensure Veterans have a smooth transition back to civilian life while addressing any health concerns that may have developed during their deployment.
The reopening of the clinic also expands access to care for Veterans with complex post-deployment health needs. Under the PACT Act, combat Veterans now have 10 years of healthcare eligibility following their separation from service. Veterans with a designated combat status can receive care for up to a decade, ensuring continuity of care during their critical reintegration period.
The clinic continues to collaborate closely with other departments at the Miami VA Healthcare System to offer seamless referrals to specialty care services, VA programs, and community partners. "Our goal is to connect Veterans with the appropriate treatment and services to support their recovery and overall well-being," said Ruiz.
Veterans have praised the clinic for its high level of service. One patient expressed gratitude for the welcoming experience, saying, "The Post-Deployment Office personnel provided EXCEPTIONAL service, clear information and guidance, and precise follow-up procedures." Another Veteran commended the entire staff, noting, "The OEF/OIF Clinic staff is outstanding. I couldn’t be happier with the care provided."
Looking ahead, the Post-Deployment Clinic plans to continue expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of Veterans. "We are committed to providing quality care and are proud to serve our combat Veterans," Ruiz emphasized.
The clinic is now open for appointments, and Veterans seeking care can contact the Post-Deployment Clinic at 305-575-7000, ext. 1-7077 to schedule an appointment.
