Ethan Winkler joined San Francisco VA Health Care System as a neurosurgeon in 2023.
He is also an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at UCSF and the Director of the UCSF VASC lab. As a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon-scientist with a background in genomics and induced pluripotent stem cells, Ethan’s lab is using his unique access to the human brain to transcend traditional lab boundaries and understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human cerebrovascular disease. His clinical and scientific focus is on conditions which lead to hemorrhagic stroke, such as arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms. More specifically, he seeks to understand the genetic programs controlling the development or progression of vascular malformations and to develop new precision-based therapies to prevent them from bleeding.
