The holiday season is often a time of joy and celebration, but for many Veterans spending Christmas in the hospital, it can also be a challenging experience.

This year, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) brought smiles to the faces of its patients through a heartwarming initiative that highlighted the power of community generosity.

Days before Christmas, volunteers from the American Legion Auxiliary packed stockings filled with an assortment of gifts, including donated puzzle books featuring word searches and crosswords. These and other items were collected from local donors and community partners who wanted to spread holiday cheer to Veterans, many of whom would never meet the recipients of their kindness.

One such recipient was Dennis Quezon, a Veteran currently receiving care at SAVAHCS. When Quezon received his stocking, his face lit up with surprise and delight. “This is perfect,” he exclaimed. “My wife loves these word searches and crosswords.” The gift not only provided him with entertainment during his hospital stay but also served as a meaningful connection to his loved one.

Reflecting on the impact of receiving the stocking, Quezon shared, “It puts a big smile on my face. It makes me happy. It just takes away all the depression, all the anxiety, all the other stress.” He described the experience as “tearful but in a joyous way,” expressing gratitude for the care provided by the staff at SAVAHCS. “I feel like I died and went to heaven,” he said, praising the dedication and attention he receives from nurses and caregivers.

Quezon’s sentiments were echoed by Dr. Tamara Campbell, Executive Director for VA’s Office of Mental Health, who acknowledged that the holiday season can bring about increased stress and feelings of sadness for many individuals. “It’s important to acknowledge that this time of year can intensify mental health concerns,” she stated. “We want to equip VHA employees with tools and support to navigate these challenges.”

The stockings filled with thoughtful gifts not only uplifted Quezon but also served as a reminder of the importance of community support during the holidays. Each item carried with it a story of generosity and care, demonstrating how small acts can create significant moments of joy.

As SAVAHCS continues to serve its Veterans during this festive season, stories like Quezon’s highlight the profound impact that kindness and compassion can have on those who have served our country. The initiative underscores a collective commitment to ensuring that every Veteran feels valued and supported, especially during the holidays.
