NEW CASTLE, Del. — Since 2019, the Wilmington VA Medical Center has buzzed with plans to open a new state-of-the-art dialysis suite to provide expanded services for its Veterans.

To improve access for patients, the unit was relocated from the fifth floor to the first floor of the Wilmington VA Medical Center. The new suite opened its doors to patients on June 5 and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on June 27 with congressional and VA staff.

“We have made this a very special place,” said Nephrologist, Dr. Donna Robino whose dad was a U.S. Army Veteran that used to receive care at the Wilmington VA Medical Center’s dialysis unit himself. “The VA believed in our mission to expand the services we have in our unit, and we did.”

The unit more than doubled in size from 2,400 square feet to over 6,100 square feet and went from a 10-patient treatment area to 12. The suite has all new equipment and two isolation rooms. These rooms are used to isolate infectious or contagious patients to give them the care they need.

“This ribbon cutting marks a significant milestone in the VA’s ongoing commitment to provide high quality healthcare and an exceptional experience for Veterans,” said Wilmington VA Director Vamsee Potluri.

In addition, three new designated parking spots have been created for dialysis patients raising the total to five spots, two in front of and three behind the medical center.

“I love the new suite,” said U.S. Army Veteran Earl Berry who has been coming to the dialysis since March of 2022. “It’s comfortable and I feel like I am sitting in my living room at home. It’s easier to access, I don’t have to wait for the elevators. There is also always parking available now.”

The dialysis suite has improved its patient experience over the years by making Veterans comfortable. Dialysis chairs are equipped with massage and heating features to minimize sitting fatigue. Veterans can also enjoy watching TV on their own personal screen. Blankets and pillows are provided to make the patient feel at home.

“We pride ourselves in being able to take care of Veterans and always choose the right thing to do,” said Kathy Young, one of Wilmington VA Medical Center’s first transplant coordinators. “It is an honor and a privilege to take care of those that served our country. Our Veterans deserve the best and we strive to give them the best!”

“The staff is extraordinary, professional, and caring,” said Mr. Berry. “They make you feel like they really care about you.”

In 2022 Wilmington VA was recognized as one of the top three dialysis suites in the nation out of over 165 VA programs. That same year it was also recognized for the National HeRO award which is the highest level of high reliability organization recognition available within the Veterans Health Administration.
