Heather Denny joined the Education for Homeless Children and Youth team at the U.S. Department of Education in late October 2021. Prior to this role, she served as Montana’s state coordinator for homeless education for 10 years, school district homeless liaison, and classroom teacher for students in grades 6-12.
At the 2019 National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) Conference, she was named State Coordinator of the Year. Denny has a B.A. in history and a certification in secondary education from the University of Texas at El Paso. In addition, she earned a master’s degree in education in both school counseling and educational leadership from Montana State University. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership at MSU.
Denny has focused her career on serving students experiencing homelessness with an emphasis on rural and American Indian students. Her family has served in this nation’s military since its inception. She is the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran and the mother of a Veteran who served in Afghanistan.
In her free time, Denny supports her three children as they complete high school and compete in football, basketball, and wrestling. She also runs a small family farm raising chickens and goats, and growing vegetables.
