Employment Interviews

Employment interviews are a common and well-established method for hiring. Interviews help organizations identify the most qualified candidates by asking about their past performance or how they would behave in potential work situations. They also allow hiring managers to assess candidates’ knowledge and skills and give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate how they would perform in the position.

VA follows best practices when conducting interviews by using Performance-based interviewing (PBI). PBI is a structured interview process that ensures candidates have similar interview experiences by (1) asking identical questions to all candidates and (2) using a consistent rating process so each candidate is assessed accurately and fairly. PBI questions are based on a thorough understanding of the job and the competencies that people working in that job need to be successful.

PBI helps the VA meet its mission of caring for Veterans and their families, caregivers, and survivors by selecting highly qualified staff.
