Veterans in the Workplace Project
In 2012 the Department of Veterans Affairs commissioned the Veterans in the Workplace Project to examine retention of Veteran employees and to identify promising practices that support retention. The study included two national research projects. The first project was a survey that targeted human resource directors or staff at 245 American companies and was designed to assess current policies, practices, and programs related to Veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve. Information was collected about a number of issues including hiring practices and retention of Veterans as well as mental health and related needs with a focus on services that support those needs. The second project was a series of in-depth case studies of 6 Fortune 500 companies designed to describe promising practices that support Veterans in the workplace and included a specific focus on Veterans with mental health difficulties.
The final products of these projects included a full report of the findings, targeted reports designed to provide information to certain groups in the employment setting, and a variety of survey informed materials related to promising practices in supporting Veterans in the workplace.
