VistA Imaging System

VistA Imaging Home  |  Overview  |  DICOM  |  HL7  |  Clinical Capture Devices

VistA Imaging has helped VA hospitals achieve an enterprise-wide paperless and filmless Electronic Health Record. The VA achieved an important milestone.  On August 25, 2019, the VA’s Veterans Health Information System Technology Architecture (VistA) Imaging system acquired its 10 billionth image, making VistA Imaging one of the largest digital medical image repositories in the world.

The imaging system now captures clinical images, scanned documents, motion video and other non-text data, and makes them part of the patient's electronic medical record. Today most of the clinical images acquired by VistA are in the DICOM format.  Over 650 different models of DICOM image acquisition instruments send images to VistA.  A little over a billion images are acquired annually.
