HAP Healthcare Advancement Initiatives

The Department of Veterans Affairs incorporates emerging and innovative methods and technologies to better understand needs and improve the delivery of benefits, care and services to Veterans, Service members, their families, caregivers and survivors. This includes leveraging formal and informal partnerships and research efforts to develop innovative community-based interventions that identify high risk Veterans and connect with them in the communities where they live.

HAP healthcare advancement initiatives (HAIs) leverage partnerships and novel approaches to advance Veteran health and social determinants by providing expertise, direction, and support for field-based initiatives. Healthcare advancement initaitives are often piloted in the field in collaboration with organzations external to VA.

HAP has led healthcare advancement initiatives on topics to improve health outcomes for Veterans with:

  • posttraumatic stress
  • history of traumatic brain injury
  • risk factors correlated with suicide
  • unmet needs across social determinants of health
