Social Worker Spotlight: Sofia Nava
“We would like to nominate and recognize Sofia Nava as an amazing woman Veteran that is also an amazing VA Social Worker! Sofia Nava is a Supervisory Social Worker in the OC HUD-VASH program and oversees the Intake and Housing Team. She is a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, social worker, and leader in Homeless Programs at VA Long Beach and in the greater Orange County community. Several Veterans have applauded Sofia for her customer service and genuine care. Sofia embodies VA’s Core Values: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, Excellence (“I CARE”). Her hard work, incredible work ethic, and commitment to Veterans does not go unnoticed. She has played a vital role in the restructuring of the OC HUD VASH teams to better streamline the services provided to homeless Veterans.”

Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in homeless programs?
I became a social worker because I wanted to improve the quality of life of others and to aid them in reaching their full potential. Working in homeless programs allows me the opportunity to engage with Veterans in a capacity where I can directly improve their quality of life. Having a place to call home is something that everyone deserves to have.
What do you do for fun? Favorite Quote? What else would you like to share about yourself?
Attending live events, concerts, and football games are my favorite activities to enjoy in person. My favorite quote is from Maya Angelou: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
