Social Worker Spotlight: Andy Truong
“Andy is a true advocate for his GLA HPACT SW team and GLA homeless Veterans. He ensures that Veterans receive quality support through the services that the HPACT SW team provides, such as temporary housing, social service resources, and collaboration with other disciplines. We would also like to recognize him for his servant leadership style and ability to effectively provide support and mentorship in an ethical way.”

How long have you been employed by the VA?
I started working at VA as a social work intern in 2012, did contracting in 2013, and became officially employed in 2014 – so it has been about 10 years.
Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
I became a social worker because engaging with people and helping to improve lives has always been a huge passion of mine. I was fortunate to meet great mentors and amazing people in the field of social work and mental health who pushed me to pursue this profession.
I like working in homeless programs because these are some of our most vulnerable Veterans. I believe that the best way to help others is by understanding human needs at different stages of life and in different socioeconomic statuses.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
During my free time, I like to provide self-care by spending time with my loved ones, exercising, listen to relaxing music, traveling, and exploring new foods and places.
My favorite quote is, “It’s the one thing you can control. You are responsible for how people remember you – or don’t. So don’t take it lightly.” – Kobe Bryant
I really enjoy quality time with my significant other, friends, and family. It does not matter if we travel afar or stay home, as long as I am with my loved ones.
