Social Worker Spotlight: Charla Killian-Young
“I would like to nominate Charla and the GPD Program after seeing firsthand the difference she and the entire homeless program makes in the lives of the Veterans in her program. There is a patient who comes to mind now, who she has advocated for and continues to advocate for despite the Veteran being out of her program.”

How long have you been employed by the VA?
4 years
Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
As a teenager, I witnessed a young boy being marginalized by an abuse of power. This experience left me asking, “Who is here to advocate on his behalf?” I decided then that I wanted to do something to make a difference.
During my career as a social worker, I have had the opportunity to serve vulnerable residents: those in need of mental health and substance abuse services. These are my people. I believe one of the highest callings is to serve and to be a part of something bigger than yourself to truly make a difference in the world.
I desired to be of service to our homeless Veterans, as they have served our country and are our most vulnerable. Many of our homeless Veterans are experiencing poor physical health as well as mental health and substance issues.
“The Time is Right ”to work together as an organization and country to end Veteran homelessness.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
I like gardening and spending time with my spouse and our dogs.
My favorite quote is:“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Gandhi
