Social Worker Spotlight: Danessa Bolling
“Ms. Bolling is being referred for her commitment to serving Veterans at a project-based site and addressing food resource needs. Ms. Bolling recently volunteered to cover the Emergency Department after her tour in the homeless program during inclement weather in 2022. Ms. Bolling has participated in several recreational therapy activities with Veterans to assist in decreasing mental health and substance abuse issues.”

How long have you been employed by the VA?
3 years
Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
I have always had a heart for others. From when I was as young as 2 years old, there are stories of me going after the lost. I think it is just who I am. VA was my way of honoring all the Veterans in my life through service. I think it is one of the highest honors in social work to say you work with Veterans. The homeless community has been a particular passion of mine for more than 20 years. I attend a church where serving the homeless is the core mission. That is what started the work for me.
The time has always been right for social workers. I think the rest of the world is just now noticing it. We have been accused of being “bleeding heart social activists.” When you look at all the ills of the world today, that is exactly what is needed: people who have a heart for others and are willing to act on it.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
I cook and teach Health Through Heritage eating. I also volunteer a lot in the community.
My favorite quote is from Bob Marley’s Redemption Song: “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.” (Well, that is one favorite. I have many.) I am a diehard sports fan, yet I really don’t understand anything that is going on most of the time. I just yell a lot.
