Social Worker Spotlight: Roy Cooper
“I am nominating Roy Cooper for his dedication to supporting and working with the Veterans residing at a project-based site within the homeless program. Mr. Cooper remained working on-site during the pandemic to meet the needs of Veterans and participated in several community activities, including an on-site COVID testing project to help decrease COVID concerns during the pandemic. In addition, Mr. Cooper participated in several recreational activities with the Travis Team to provide Veterans with a sense of normalcy throughout the pandemic.”

How long have you been employed by the VA?
5 years
Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
I became a social worker to fight injustices through advocacy and action in my community.
I originally chose VA as an MSW Intern because I wanted to help end homelessness among the Veteran population.
The time is right for social workers because the world is finally recognizing social work as the life changing profession it is. We are no longer regarded as “those people who take people’s kids.” We are now highly regarded for our wealth of knowledge and for the lasting impact we have with our clients.
This year’s theme resonates with me because the values of the social work profession are now receiving the spotlight it deserves.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
I enjoy watching football.
My favorite quotes are: “You reap what you sow,” and “Hard work and consistency equals success.”
