Social Worker Spotlight: Southern Arizona HUD-VASH Team
“I would like to nominate the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System’s HUD-VASH team — Colleen Davenport (SW), Jennifer Premer (SW), Daniella Bregman (SW), Brittany Herrera (SW), and Carol Galindo (Social Service Assistant) — for the Social Work Month spotlight for their tireless efforts to provide supportive housing for homeless Veterans. The team, led by Colleen Davenport, LCSW, provides care to medically complex homeless Veterans who require intensive care coordination. The team consistently goes above and beyond to ensure these Veterans not only stay housed but are safely housed with their medical needs met. The team exemplifies the true team approach by coordinating closely with our HUD-VASH nurses and occupational therapists. The team works hard, consistently maintains a positive attitude, and engages the Veterans they serve with empathy and respect!”

Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
We became social workers to make a difference; we wanted to become change agents. We wanted to work at VA because we enjoy giving back to people who have served our country. We all wanted to work with homeless Veterans because we believe that everyone deserves a home. We believe that shelter is a basic need and we want to empower Veterans to learn to live independently.
The time is right for social work because it is an essential part of Veterans’ healthcare, which we believe is sometimes overlooked.
