Social Worker Spotlight: Tanya Thompson
“I would like to highlight Ms. Tanya Thompson’s 15 years of dedicated service to the Alexandria VA Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program. She is the most tenured homeless employee at Station 502. She has served in the capacity of an Outreach Case Manager and Contract Liaison. She is currently employed as the Coordinated Entry Specialist. She is very knowledgeable about homeless services in our catchment area and is willing to share that knowledge with others. She is thorough, organized, and is constantly suggesting ways to improve processes and services within the HCHV program. Her commitment to homeless Veterans and the homeless program, in whatever capacity she is needed, is commendable.”
— Desmona H. Johnson, LCSW-BACS, HCHV Program Coordinator

How long have you been employed by the VA?
15 years
Why did you become a social worker? What do you like about working in VHA homeless programs?
I became a social worker in the hopes of making a difference in the lives of others. I chose to work for VA Homeless Programs because this is such a vulnerable population. I want to advocate on their behalf and ensure they are treated with the upmost respect and dignity. I chose to work at the VA because I come from a strong military background and wanted to give back to the Veterans who have sacrificed in order to protect our freedoms.
"The time is right” due to the challenges of the pandemic, it has reminded me of the importance of hope. As social workers, we strive to instill hope in our Veterans and offer the support and encouragement they need to overcome their obstacles.
What else would you like to share about yourself?
“Life is like a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving” — Albert Einstein
For fun, I enjoy being outdoors, gardening, and spending time with my 2 dogs.
