Research Interests
My research interests lie in 1) colorectal cancer prevention, 2) Inflammatory bowel disease, and 3) the human microbiome in health and disease, particularly C. Difficile Infection, and its treatment with Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT). In colorectal cancer prevention I am the Site Investigator for the NCI's FORTE trial, – a nationwide multicenter trial examining whether a ten-year colonoscopy follow up after resection of only one or two low-risk adenomas during colonoscopy was safe and effective compared to the more typically recommended five-year follow up interval. I am also the sub-site PI for the VA's long-running CONFIRM trial of colonoscopy vs. FIT (fecal testing) in colorectal cancer prevention. For C. difficile I am on the executive committee of the recently-completed VA CSP 2004 MATCH trial of FMT vs. Placebo to prevent recurrence of C. difficile colitis. My work in IBD is mainly clinical at this time, but in the past I've been involved in a variety of projects looking at improving clinical care and medication use for Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
