Office of Internal Audit
What We Do
The Office of Internal Audit (IA) serves as a partner to VHA as the agency works to become a High-Reliability Organization. IA offers an objective view, providing information that refines program operations and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. The findings from IA's engagements help all VA employees provide the best care to Veterans.
Mission
IA helps VHA employees strengthen the value, quality and reliability of health care and promotes Veteran trust by continuously improving VHA operations.
How We Help
The IA team brings expertise in audit standards, clinical care, process controls, statistics and data analysis. IA collaborates with stakeholders throughout the entire engagement process from planning through execution to ensure they target the appropriate risks and identify actionable and realistic recommendations for success.
The IA approach is different from other oversight and accountability offices. IA engagements provide independent, objective and systematic examination of evidence to assess the performance and management of a program against objective criteria, which may include best practices or other standards. For example, IA can look at how effective a program is at meeting its goals or verify that a program is complying with established laws or regulations.
Why VHA Programs Work with IA
IA works with program managers within medical centers, Veterans Integrated Services Networks and program offices to identify potential issues early on before they become a public concern at no additional cost to the program. When working with IA, VHA employees can continue their day-to-day work while knowing they are continuously improving their programs to provide the best care to Veterans.
