VA and Habitat for Humanity Partnership Pilot
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Habitat for Humanity International have announced a new pilot program that will increase affordable homeownership opportunities among the Veteran population.
This one-year pilot program will allow Veterans enrolled in Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Build program at affiliates in Saginaw, MI, Mingo County, WV, and Will and DuPage counties, IL, and the HUD-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program to use their housing choice rental assistance voucher to partially subsidize homeownership expenses for up to 10 or 15 years depending on the mortgage term.
VA will also provide case management and clinical services to Veterans enrolled in the pilot project to help prevent future housing and personal crises.
Objectives for the partnership include:
- Increase homeownership opportunities for Veterans engaged in VHA homeless programs.
- Increase collaboration between the Department and Habitat for Humanity International.
- Increase collaboration between local VA medical centers and Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
- Increase access to VA resources for Veterans identified by Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
- Surface emerging innovations for broader dissemination to local VA medical centers and Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
