Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence
Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence Network Facilities
The Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence (MSCoE) are committed to ensuring access and excellence in VA MS health care services. VA MS care delivery is achieved through a national MS System of Care network. This network consists of the MSCoE Coordinating Centers, MS Regional Programs (MS RPs), and all other VA medical facilities providing care to Veterans with MS and related neuro-immunological disorders.
MSCoE Coordinating Centers
There are two MSCoE Coordinating Centers. MSCoE-East is jointly located in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC, while MSCoE-West is jointly located in Seattle, WA and Portland, OR. The Coordinating Centers raise the standard of MS care for all Veterans with MS by setting national standards of MS clinical care, conducting MS research, employing informatics to assess MS care utilization and access, and providing educational opportunities for MS providers and Veterans with MS and their care partners.
The Coordinating Centers collaborate with MS RPs and all other VA facilities across the U.S. to ensure delivery of excellent local MS care with access to specialty services through a hub and spoke model. MSCoE designates VA medical facilities as MS RPs based on mandated criteria which can be found in our Directive. MSCoE clinical staff are available for consultation with VA health care providers for Veterans receiving their MS care within the VA.
MS Regional Programs
The MS RPs provide MS specialty care with a continuum of acute, chronic, and long-term care services consistent with Veterans Health Administration policies. The Director of the MS RP has specific training or extensive experience in MS management. The MS RPs provide MS multi-disciplinary specialty care and MS care coordination with a continuum of acute, chronic, and long-term care services consistent with Veterans Health Administration policies. Directors of RPs have MS expertise to lead the multi-disciplinary MS care teams at their facilities and provide direct care and/or clinical consultation and care coordination to Veterans with MS in their designated regions. There is a minimum of one MS RP in each Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) with additional MS RPs based on service needs.
VA medical facilities that are not designated an MS RP can contact their regional MS RP via e-mail, TEAMS call, or interfacility consult for MS disease management, symptomatic care, rehabilitation, and use of community care services as needed. As necessary, MS RPs and other VA facilities seek consultation from the MSCoE Coordinating Centers to ensure a national standard of MS care.
