Why Partner with VHIE?

VHIE bridges the gap for care coordination.  Partnering with VHIE enables non-VA health care providers to access real-time electronic health data to enhance care coordination. By sharing health data through health information exchanges (HIEs), providers can leverage industry-standard tools to ensure seamless continuity of care.

HIEs are supported by tools used across the health care industry to share this information, improve continuity of care, and reduce duplicative tests and clinical errors when patients see health care providers from different practices or health care networks.

Below are tools managed by VHIE to exchange electronic health information with non-VA partners and providers:

VA Exchange

VA Exchange, powered by eHealth Exchange, Carequality, and CommonWell Health Alliance, enables bi-directional sharing of VA health information between VA and participating non-VA partners and providers. The information is exchanged over a secure network and includes medical history, allergies, medications, immunizations and more.

For more information on how to participate, please see our VA Exchange Non-VA Provider Onboarding Flyer or contact the VA Exchange Team at VAExchangeInformation@va.gov to get started. Click here to see if your organization is already a participating non-VA partner or provider.

VA Direct

VA Direct is a VA-wide web tool that allows VA staff to securely send and receive VA health information with participating providers who are a part of the DirectTrust Network. It eliminates the burden of administrative tasks such as faxing, mailing, or hand-delivering health information.

If you represent a health care organization and would like to learn more about the process to send and receive Direct messages with VA, the current/potential VA Direct workflows, or the benefits of Direct, please see our Provider Fact Sheet or contact the VA Direct Team at VADirectInfo@va.gov. If you are a participating provider and need technical support specific to VA Direct, please contact VADirectSupport@va.gov. Please note that a provider must have its own Direct Messaging System to send and receive VA patient health information via VA Direct.

If you are seeking assistance or more information about other VA Programs, such as My HealtheVet (including its Secure Messaging program), click here. For more information about receiving care in the community, visit the Office of Community Care.

External Health Registries

External Health Registries can send and/or receive Public Health information. The team provides program management operation services and analysis support to Public Health Registries, specifically tied to the implementation, sustainment, and enhancement of VA’s new electronic health record (EHR). This includes the Immunization Capability, Electronic Lab Reporting (ELR), and Syndromic Surveillance Reporting (SSR) tools. External Health Registries work with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) clinical program offices (e.g., PMOP Office, Population Health Services) to utilize national gateway platforms (e.g., PMP Gateway, CDC IZ Gateway) to support electronic health information queries from, and/or reporting to, federal and state/jurisdictional registries.
