VHIE and eHIE Overview

What you need to know about VA Electronic Health Information Sharing
This video explains what VA patients should know about VA electronic health information sharing, its benefits for care coordination and continuity of care, and managing sharing preferences.

Veterans Health Information Exchange (VHIE) Program Office manages the tools VA clinicians use to seamlessly and securely access the information they need to coordinate your care

Electronic health information exchange (eHIE) allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists, other health care providers and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient's vital medical information electronically improving the speed, quality, safety, and cost of patient care (CAT scans, images, and X-rays are not electronically exchanged at this time).

Seamless and secure sharing means your care team will be able to:

  • Better understand your health history and be able to focus more time on what is important to you
  • Develop safer and more effective treatment plans
  • Work together to improve your overall health

Your care team can safely send and receive electronic health information through a secure gateway, the Joint Health Information Exchange (joint HIE).

VA only shares your health information with participating non-VA partners and providers when they are treating you.
